History of IIMT:

Shri Chandra Kanta Chatterjee (C. K. Chaterjee), a Bio Medical Engineer served the well-known the then Woodlands Nursing Home – Alipore , Kolkata , under The East India Clinic Ltd. for fifteen years as a Bio Medical Engineer to look after maintenance of all life saving medical equipments. It was his realization during his hospital experience that:

1.  To improve overall healthcare systems all medical personnel needed education in

      Human values and Medical Ethics.

2.  Doctors , Nurse and Paramedical staff working in critical care units (ICCU, ITU, OT) needed special training in internal medicine and modern life saving medical equipment to perform better.

Shri Chaterjee held regular consultation on these above two issues with several top senior physicians of Kolkata to start training centre for Doctors on these two subjects from the end of 1997.

In the beginning of year 2004  Shri Chaterjee formed an organization in the name of LOKSEVA SHIKSHA KENDRA- JOKA (LSK) to start a course for Doctor on Human values and Medical Ethics under leadership of Prof. S K Chakraborty (Ex Prof. IIM-Joka , Kolkata) , Dr. Kishor Nandi (Cardiologist) and Dr. Sudipta Kumar  Sen (Physician) extended their hands of cooperation to Shri Chatterjee to form LSK.  In beginning of year 2004 under umbrella of LSK started Indian Institute for Medical Technology to conduct training on medical technology for doctors. In month of June 2004 Shri Chatterjee obtained recommendation from The West Bengal University of Health Sciences to start above mentioned courses for Doctors and received NOC from Dept. of Health Govt. of West Bengal.

In beginning of year 2005, Dr. Kishor Nandi (Cardiologist) , Dr. Sudipta Sen (Physician) and Shri Chatterjee realized, to make the concept in reality it required a dedicated academician. Accordingly, Prof. Dr. Sukumar Mukherjee was approached. After realizing the importance and gravity of the subject, Prof. Mukherjee decided to render his maximum efforts to make the concept successful. In the same year 2005 under President ship of Prof. Mukherjee  INDIAN INSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY (IIMT) was registered under The West Bengal Societies Registration Act of 1961, to implement the  plans to present day reality.

15th April 2005 in presence of the then Vice chancellor, DME , Chairman WBMC and several distinguished guest (IIMT) started a course (CERTIFICATE IN CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE & TECHNOLOGY)

Name of course:  APPLICATION OF LIFE SAVING MEDICAL EQUIPMENT (ALME)

Mr. C K Chatterjee conceived the idea of this type of training programme during his period of working at Woodlands, But this idea would not have materialised without the encouragement and dedicated active support of most respected Professor and Academician in the medical field like: Prof. Dr. Sukumar Mukherjee, Prof. Dr. Dhiman Ganguly, Prof. Dr. A W Laiq , Dr. Kishore Nandi, Dr. Sudipta Kumar Sen, and other several distinguished Doctors.

By the beginning of 2006 Shri Chatterjee’s bold initiative had started receiving recognition when, Doctors along with Faculties of several Govt. Medical Colleges are attending to enhance their skills in critical care medicine and technology in IIMT and obtained Affiliation from The West Bengal University of Health Sciences in year 2018.  Participating doctors are coming from Calcutta Medical College, N R S Medical College, National Medical College, SSKM Hospital Etc. IIMT providing this training without any course fees for Doctors of Govt. hospital.

We are remembering noble contribution of Prof. Dr. Dhiman Ganguly, at present Chairman of our academic committee and several distinguished doctors, who had taken classes as Faculty to maintain high quality of teaching since inception of IIMT.

We are also remembering noble contribution of Mr. C. K. Chatterjee founder and Ex. General Secretary who left his post due to poor health recently. Without his active and continuous support since inception this institute  wouldn’t have reached its success.

Premises of our Institute: More or less 1000 sq.ft. Space in heart of city donated by C K Chatterjee, our Ex General secretary and Founder member on academic interest.

Fund to run our Institute: Since inception More or less 90% out of total expense donated by C K Chatterjee, our Ex General secretary and Founder member on academic interest, balance - donated by several academic minded people and Doctors from time to time.

Objective of our Institute: We are all aware that the number of Intensive Care Units is increasing very fast and it is very difficult to get doctors who are well conversant on use of modern life saving therapeutic medical equipments as generally needed in Intensive Care Units. It has been observed that the demand of this course has been upcoming day by day remarkably amongst doctors working both in Public and Private sector specially in Intensive Care Units. Medical equipments can broadly be classified into two groups – Diagnostic and Therapeutic. Therapeutic equipments (100% Lifesaving) like Ventilator, Defibrillator, Pacemaker, Dialysis machine etc. are required to treat critical patients in Intensive Care Unit, but proper training on this type of life saving medical equipments are not included in the existing curricula of medical courses. As per information received from W. B. University of Health Sciences this type of training is being introduced for the first time in our country.

I am looking forward for all of your kind helps to run our course and for this act of kindness of yours, I shall be forever grateful.

For Indian Institute for Medical Technology

Soham Chatterjee – General Secretary
